RCC Our Texas and University of Houston’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences present
“Second-Hand Nostalgia. On Soviet Things and Post-Soviet People”
Evening with Dr. Serguei Oushakine
Why do Soviet things continue to fascinate people who had no first-hand experience of life in the USSR?
In his talk, Dr. Oushakine will explore Soviet nostalgic objects as half-disappeared, decomposing, or abandoned fragments of the past, which continue to capture, stir and charm. By looking at museum exhibitions and photo-projects implemented recently in Russia, he will examine key characteristics of a new wave of nostalgia for Soviet materiality.
The talk is accompanied by slide show.
Serguei Oushakine is Professor of Anthropology and Slavic Languages and Literatures, and Director of the Program in Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies at Princeton University.
Light Soviet-style refreshments will be served.
We invite our guests to bring any objects from Soviet past to display during the event.
