Evening of Russian Song

WHAT: Maria Markina – mezzo-soprano.

The repertoire for the recital will include Mussorgsky, Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky and others.

Mezzo-soprano Maria Markina, a native of Moscow, is a second-year artist with Houston Grand Opera Studio. In HGO’s 2006-2007 season, she sang Ancella in Simon Boccanegra, Hansel in the alternate cast performances of Hansel and Gretel, and Lapak and the Woodpecker in The Cunning Little Vixen. During Houston Grand Opera’s 2007-2008 season, she will sing the Second Lady in Die Zauberflöte.

She studied piano for eight years at the Fredric Chopin Music School. From 1997 to 2002, she studied at the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts with Professor A. B. Titel, and studied voice with E. T. Sarkisyan.  She joined Moscow’s Novaya Opera Theatre in 2002.

Ms. Markina won first place in the 2006 Eleanor McCollum Competition for Young Singers.
